The Mariner’s MVP on the season continues to be Ichiro according to run values. He’s been worth 39 runs above a league average player thus far in 2009, but others have stepped up nicely as well. Russell Branyan’s bat and Franklin Gutierrez’s glove have also turned in excellent seasons. In fact, according to Fangraphs’ defensive UZR ratings, Gutierrez has saved his pitchers more runs than any other player in the league. Add in an above average bat, and Gutierrez is worth 32 runs above the average fill-in.
On the pitching side, King Felix has been the anchor to an otherwise mediocre staff, recording a run value of better than 21 runs. I was fooled into thinking for a while that it was pitching that was saving the Ms this season, but in reality it’s the defense that’s saving the pitching that’s saving the Ms. Catch all that?
Anyway, check out all the Mariner player’s run values here.
