After another stellar performance last night, Cliff Lee has the AL’s best ERA, and by far the Major League’s best strikeout-to-walk ratio (K/BB). Lee has pitched 86 2/3 innings, with 76 Ks and just 4 walks. FOUR FRICKIN’ WALKS! That’s obscene. It’s not even fair. Texas’ Rich Harden has already walked 43 batters in just 65 innings, Baltimore’s Mike Gonzalez has walked 4 batters in only 2 innings of work this season, and Seattle’s own Ryan Rowland-Smith walked 5 batters in one start just last week. Cliff Lee is the best starter in the American League this season, hands down.
In my last post, I talked about the Mariners slim chances of winning the division and/or making the playoffs, arguing that the Ms need to get something for Cliff Lee NOW while his value is through the roof. Now that the Mariners are riding a six game winning streak….. nothing has changed. Unfortunately Texas has won 10 in a row, and still sits 13 games ahead of the Mariners for the division lead. Exactly where they were 6 games ago, only now, the Ms have less time to make up the ground. 1995 was a special year for Seattle when they came back from 15 down to win the division, but betting on that happening again will cost the Mariners a lot in trade value.
